THE PLAGUE STONES
James Brogden, 2019 (Titan Books)
This was a hugely anticipated novel, after the success of Brogden’s Hekla’s Children (9/10) and it didn’t disappoint. Crawling with eeriness from the get go, the novel follows Trish Feenan, relocating to a small village after a violent break-in left her needing a fresh start. Her family soon discover that the picturesque community harbours dark secrets; terrible secrets that reveal themselves in the most terrifying ways. Brogden’s style reminds me of peak James Herbert and the atmosphere created in the writing really draws you in. A gripping read. 8/10 (CB)
