THE MAGIC COTTAGE
James Herbert, 1986 (Pan Books 1999)
Herbert is known as one of the true masters of horror. His 23 books, including titles such as Rats, The Fog, Shrine, Haunted, The Ghosts of Sleath and Ash, all became instant bestsellers and with good reason. He never failed to create lived-in worlds, believable characters and ultimately chilling stories.
The Magic Cottage sees Herbert at his height and follows a couple as they settle into their dream home. Obviously, not all is quite as it seems and the dream soon turns into a nightmare. The book is pitched beautifully and is in equal parts magical and terrifying. It is an absolute must read!
