The Descent Review
It's dark.
THE DESCENT
(Celador, Pathe, 2005)
Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, Doomsday) directs this claustrophobic horror about a group of friends, who go caving out in the wilds of North Carolina.
Widely considered to be one of the best horror films of the 2000s, the film doesn’t waste time setting up characters, but instead chooses to let the characters come to life as the film goes on, and true characters are certainly revealed as the shit begins to hit the fan.
Each scene is caked in darkness and suspense, masterfully directed, and the characters here are believable and played perfectly, especially the haunted Sarah, played by Shauna Macdonald (Daybreak, Howl).
The film builds the fear well; it feels like you are with the group, along for the whole terrifying ride. You might not want to watch this one with the lights off.
